Led lighting for energy EFFICIENCY

Most of us grew up with incandescent bulbs that could cook a small cake in a Betty Crocker oven. But did you know the United States is no longer manufacturing or importing 40-watt and 60-watt incandescent bulbs? And do you know why? The phase-out of incandescent bulbs comes after the federal government determined the need to become a more energy-efficient nation. As a result, LEDs are the perfect replacement for incandescent, since they last much longer and provide significant and long-term savings on home and business energy costs.
LEDs have been around for a long time and were traditionally and primarily used as signal lights and indicator lights, such as the power button on a computer. However, they’ve come a long way and are now more common in households and businesses than ever. Believe it or not, there are several styles and wattages available to meet all of your lighting needs.
So in light of the incandescent bulb phase-out, let’s take a closer look at some illuminating facets of LEDs.

led tubes

Most have heard the acronym but not everyone knows what L-E-D stands for or how they are engineered. LEDs, or light–emitting diodes, are semiconductor devices that produce visible light when an electrical current passes through them.
Whats Cool about L.E.Ds
A lot! Here are some key considerations and upsides of this lighting choice.
Temperature
Did you know that 90% of the energy produced by incandescent goes toward heat and only 10% toward light? Because the heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink, LEDs don’t emit as much heat and remain a great energy-efficient lighting option.
Color and Brightness Choices
Unlike traditional incandescent and CFLs, white is no longer your only choice for energy-efficient light bulbs. LEDs also come in a variety of colors, such as amber, red, green, and blue. They also come in different brightness levels to fit your personal lighting style.

DESIGN

Design
LEDs provide unique design opportunities and can be incorporated into different bulbs and various lighting fixtures. Some actually look like regular light bulbs and there are even LED replacements for other lighting options such as recessed down lighting. Also, because LEDs heat up at once, they are a superior dimming solution over their CFL counterparts. If you’re interested in more information about LEDs and the innovative changes being made to their design you can request a consultation with one of our lighting experts.
Safety
LEDs do not contain mercury and are made of a durable plastic instead of glass. They also remain cool to the touch, making them more fire retardant.

longterm led

LEDs for the long term?
The typical incandescent bulb lasts about 1,000 hours, while a 12-watt LED bulb lasts a whopping 25,000 hours. In other words, incandescent last about a year while LEDs can last up to 25years! According to Energy.gov, you could lower your annual lighting costs by 25%-80% by switching to energy-efficient bulbs like LEDs.
What about the cost of LEDs?If every household replaced just one incandescent bulb with an “Energy Star”-rated LED, the Caribbean would save close to $700 million per year in energy costs.
So while LED individual bulbs may cost a bit more than incandescent, they save you on energy and replacement costs, making them less expensive in the long term.
Lastly, we want to tell you how you can cost-effectively replace your current light bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs.
As part of the current energy efficiency initiatives, many brands and styles of LED light bulbs are already discounted at most retailers. Look for this label for cost-effective LED bulb purchases.
